Call for Abstracts – NOW CLOSED
Working in the alcohol and other drug sector requires you to be adaptable and asks you to dig deep on a professional and personal level. This work can be very rewarding and the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives is a rewarding part of the work. However there are many challenges, for example: new and emerging drug types, a housing crisis, the ongoing stigma experienced by some alcohol and other drug workers and working in rural and regional settings all impact the day to day life of a worker. How have you and your organisation met this head on?
Or maybe you work in policy, prevention and/or health promotion and want to share how you are making an impact and changing Tasmania’s relationship with alcohol and other drugs?
The 2020 ATDC Conference themes are: Courage. Change. Impact. What do these words mean for you and your work? We would love to hear about a best practice example of a program that that is making an impact? Or a presentation on a topic that is courageous or contentious? How do you want our sector to be challenged? Our sector in undergoing change and reform- what direction should it take?
The 2020 ATDC Conference Courage. Change. Impact. program will be streamed by these three key terms. Following keynote presentations, concurrent sessions and workshops will run to provide delegates with sufficient choice to enjoy a varied and stimulating conference program.
Don’t be limited by traditional definitions.

|Presentation Type||Time allocated||Description|
|Oral presentation||15 minutes||Oral presentations outlining issues and solutions to problems in ATOD practice, community engagement, education, health promotion and policy. Presentations should be well structured and demonstrate a novel contribution to knowledge.|
|Poster presentation||Permanently displayed during the conference. Authors must be standing with their posters during dedicated poster session.||Posters can present research in progress, case studies or outlining programs and approaches. A poster viewing session will take place for delegates to discuss the posters with their authors.|
|Workshop||60 minutes||Workshops should facilitate and engage discussion with the participants. Consider the objectives for your participants and the learning outcomes. Lecture style presentation should be kept to a minimum keeping in mind that a workshop is a facilitation exercise.|
|Food for thought||5 minutes||Food for Thought presentations are for case studies, local perspectives and new services. These presentations do not require the same level of structure and delivery as standard oral presentations. There will be several in one session.|
|A panel or symposium||60 minutes. Presentations are 10 minutes each with 5 minutes of discussion for each and 15 minutes at the end allocated for a group discussion.||Three presentations with one Chair. Symposia provide an opportunity to present on one topic, often from multiple standpoints, providing a coherent viewpoint on the topic.|
We expect all presenters to be aware of the potential of language to be stigmatising, here is the recommended guide put together by NUAA and NADA to start you thinking on this issue.
How do I submit an abstract?
Before submitting your abstract, please ensure you read the information in the ‘Presentation Types’ section above and choose the format that best matches the content of your presentation carefully.

Tips and Tricks
– Your abstract will be printed in the conference program. Please consider this when writing your abstract, structure it accordingly (including any relevant data) and proofread abstracts carefully to avoid errors before submission.
– Try to ensure that what you are presenting is new or innovative material that will be of interest to the conference delegates.
– If you have any results or findings from a program or approach to demonstrate impact, this will be regarded favourably.
– Please keep introductions brief, some of the best learning happens during discussion. Due to time constraints presenters are asked to keep their introductions brief and include only speakers name, occupation and organisation.
Notification of Acceptance
Notifications of acceptance will be sent via email to the submitting author by Tuesday 3 March 2020. Abstracts submitted for oral will also be considered and reviewed for a poster presentation.
